An understandable issues that many people have with debian is that the 
stable release is, well, it's a little old.  Such is the price of 
stability, but, sometimes this is a deal killer if you want to run 
stable, but also want, for instance, the most recent version of snort, 
or spamassassin, or samba.

Pinning is one solution

There is another, though

A very wise astronaut friend of mine told me about

http://www.backports.org

the use of which allows one to simply add this line to /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://www.backports.org/debian stable <package name>

run apt-get update, and then apt-get install <package name>

and voila', your are in 2004.
